Irwindale Delays Decision On Sriracha Factory

IRWINDALE (CNS) - The Irwindale City Council has voted to postpone a  decision on whether to declare a factory making Sriracha hot sauce a public  nuisance.

Council members on Wednesday said they wanted to give Huy Fong Food Inc. more time to  work with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to identify a  solution, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Complaints about the air stinging from the seasonal mashing of peppers  near the plant led the city to take civil action against the sauce maker and,  in November, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert O'Brien ordered the plant  to mitigate the problem.

Since then, the city has expanded its lawsuit.

``The city of Irwindale is trying to shut us down,'' Huy Fong operations  executive Donna Lam said before the meeting.

Mayor Mark Breceda said the city has ``never taken any action to shut  down the factory, but when we get complaints, we want to work with the company  to fix them,'' according to The Times.
